Target Acquired: AMBUSH Designs Claw Rings

It's an AMBUSH!!! These are some statement rings if I ever saw one. They have such a powerful weight to them and so fun to wear! The blue version comes with gold bands (as I assume all of the other styles do) and the silver is the same color throughout. The shipping from Japan was unbelievably fast. I am very pleased with the quality of AMBUSH's products and customer service. I highly recommend getting these before they are knocked off! If you are thinking about ordering, here is a sizing tip: my ring finger is a US size 8, so I ordered the size "3" on the website. This worked out perfectly for the other fingers. Good luck!

Glamour Shots

I found out what GPOY meant. I'm not sure that was the best discovery.

Vintage Motorcycle Jacket, H&M x Versace Sweater, Naked and Famous Denim, Nike Air Jordan 3, Hermés Bag

There are a couple of things I want to share with you all. First, I "borrowed" my brother's Jordan's after rolling my ankle during Christmas. No one is more surprised than I am, but somehow they go great with everything. I've never been a sneaker head so the borrow was purely out of necessity. Walking with a rolled ankle is impossible in unforgiving, leather brogues. Jordan's became my orthopedic shoes and my ankle's best friend. Two words: ARCH SUPPORT. Also, here is a close up of my initials stamped into the reverse side of the touret on my black Birkin. I like my monograms discreet, so this is the place I chose for all of them.

Yesterday, I finally styled a shoot after a long hiatus of active creative work. It was so much fun! The theme I conjured was "a motorcycle jacket for every man." My collection of outerwear has grown over the years, resulting in a strange mixture I am fond and proud of. Looking at the variations on one consistent item in my wardrobe (leather jackets) showed me how I came to my current styling choices. I have been so confused about my attraction to random styles, trying to make Rick Owens and J.Crew fit together. Perhaps it all makes sense when you look at the OCD preppy phase in my youth, the vintage/glam adventures I had in college, my quest for androgynous perfection, big brother's influence throughout my life, and my label obsessions in between.

Target... Acquired?

Karen Walker Sunglasses, Uniqlo +J Blazer, Céline Zara Silk Shirt, Naked and Famous Denim, Prada Shoes

On my never ending quest to obtain the Céline shirt I have been obsessing over since its runway debut, I may have found an acceptable substitute. I wandered into Zara looking to score on some basics during their mega sale and found this splendid silk shirt that mimics the original. It had to have been a return from another store because I have never seen it. The piece has a brilliant print that is similar enough to the Céline to achieve the same aesthetic, but different enough to be a dignified knock off without being completely counterfeit. Hooray! Now cross your fingers I can find the original when I go to Hong Kong. I hope I don't develop a silk shirt phase.

Target Acquired: Hermés 40cm Veau Togo Etoupe Birkin Bag

Christmas came early this year. Behold my third child/Hermés handbag, the elusive 40cm Veau Togo Etoupe Birkin. Ever since I was a little boy I have dreamed of obtaining three coveted colors of the Birkin: A shade of Bleu, Noir, and either Etoupe or Gold. My trio is complete and I couldn't be more excited! I once crossed paths with this rare color before; I was lacking the funds and the soft and drapey Taurillon Clemence leather was not my first choice. With such a delicate hue, I wanted the leather to be structured. Patience and hard work and eating cheap food paid off once again! My luck at the San Francisco store may have something to do with the fact that my daily route to work includes a stroll right in front of Hermés, but I saw the plastic wrapped, factory fresh, newly shipped box opened and knew it was time.

The Veau Togo Etoupe leather is absolutely brilliant. The grain of this Togo skin is just as fine as in a Clemence and somehow just as soft and spongy. Usually Togo leather is stiff and rigid but this structured bag is firm yet supple. I am in love! Surprisingly I pulled the trigger on the 40cm. I was waiting for another 35cm bag, but my obsession with the color had a "more to love" effect on me. Etoupe is the perfect color of elegance. It reminds me of trench coats, dewy mornings, smoke from an extinguished candle, and tea. Hopefully this will put a hiatus on my Hermés bag hunger, but that may just be wishful thinking. Here is to another year of saving. Like I have said before, Birkins are like children - AND I'VE ALWAYS WANTED A BIG FAMILY.

Please don't shoot me.

Varsity Blues

Zara Jacket, J. Crew Khakis, Lanvin High-Tops, Hermés Jewelry

My long time need for a letterman jacket has been temporarily sated by this piece from Zara. It isn't quite the quarterback special, but the contrast leather sleeves make this the big sister version. The proportions can be changed with a simple tuck, it wears quite differently from doing up the buttons. I love the shape of the neck as well. Applause for versatility!

As happy as I am about this jacket, I still want a nice letterman with my initials and a few patches. Let me know if you see something!! Obviously the prep and spike combo continues. I find myself wearing more black again, but I don't think I could ever give up color. There is much from my closet to be sold as I prepare to move to New York. I wonder what will make the cut and what will prove to be cases of fast fashion impulse buying...

Newsies

Zara Tunic, H&M Trousers, Burberry Prorsum Loafers, Balenciaga Clutch

My obsession with the Céline silhouette continues. I may have missed out on the foulard blouse, but thank goodness for Zara and fast fashion. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT I GOT THIS CAFTAN/TUNIC/THING IN THE MEN'S SECTION?? I usually don't shop at this brand's men's department, but I was able to acquire the "limited edition" piece in New York. Zara has an approxiamte 2 week capsule turn around (introducing new looks every two weeks) so I am not quite sure what limited edition really means, but I could not find the tunic here in San Francisco. Perhaps limited edition pieces are only available at certain locations. This tunic is one of my new favorite daily staples. Not only does it fill the void in my heart closet of the Céline blouse, but it is also excellent for layering. The front-tuck is perfect for the long top. Also, behold my new Balenciaga envelope clutch. I was attracted to the anthracite color because it is a shade of blue/ocean that has a similarity to stone. The clutch is the perfect size for all essentials and daily use.

Summer is finally here. It is strange to not bring a jacket to work on account of having 80 degree weather. I hope it keeps up!!

Simple and Clean: Back to Basics

Jacket by Uniqlo +J, Tee by Adam Kimmel, Denim by J.Crew, Loafers by Burberry Prorsum, Collier de Chien Ring by Hermés, WOC by Chanel

I wear a lot of prints. Stars and polka dots are my favorites, but every now and then I like to keep it clean. There is nothing better than an ensemble comprised of a well cut blazer, plain white tee, and a classic shoe. I was fortunate enough to acquire a +J Blazer at Uniqlo the last time I was in New York. I hear this fall collection is Jil Sander's last collection for Uniqlo, so I will probably spend some time there in September. The tee I am wearing is the perfect weight of cotton in the perfect shade of white. It is comfortable and simple, just like these old J.Crew jeans. To add some interest, pair a simple outfit with a spin on a classic shoe, like these thick-soled tassled loafers by Burberry Prorsum.

My Chanel Wallet on a Chain is the best. I love the classic, simple shape and clean design of the bag. When the chain or cross body style doesn't go with an outfit, the WOC works perfect as a clutch. There is nothing more useful than a versatile classic :)

Blue Period

Scott Campbell Tattoo Stole in Bleu by Louis Vuitton, Navy Wallet on a Chain by Chanel, Custom Navy Pentagram Harness by Zana Bayne Leather, 35cm Bleu de Malte Clemence Birkin and Indigo Suede Collier de Chien by Hermés

I am going through my blue period. Blue has always been one of my favorite colors. It reminds me of the sky and the sea, calm and clarity. A deep, rich shade of blue is bewitching - especially in leather. Here are a few of my true blue darlings displayed on a wooden deer head and gold leaf console from Shotwell SF. If you have kept up with me thus far, all but one of these treasures should already look familiar. Welcome to the family the Chanel Wallet on a Chain. It is the cutest, handiest little bag. Inside, the elegant clutch is lined with navy grosgrain ribbon and comes equipped with 6 card slots, 2 pockets, and 2 zippered pouches. On the outside, the luxurious caviar lambskin leather is decorated with silver double C's and a convenient pocket on the back, hanging on a silver chain that is laced with more leather. Originally I bought the bag to serve as a crossbody, but when I tuck the chain away it becomes an awesome clutch. The size is functional and fits all the essentials. I am still on the fence about getting one of the classic 2.55 bags because it is too feminine for my style. Not that this Wallet on a Chain is the butchest thing I own, but it still compliments my wardrobe. It is the perfect first Chanel for me!

Blue is a color I really connect with. I wonder if there are any colors that just sing to you?

'Till the World Ends

All clothing by Burberry Prorsum SS2011

I have been holding off on blogging this piece because it took me a while to photograph it in ways to show off my favorite parts. I am no model, and my self-timer/tri-pod had a fun time trying to get it right. My Burberry Prorsum collection continues to grow as I welcome the SS2011 Studded Jacket to my closet. First of all, this piece is heavy. It has to weigh at least 10-12 lbs. So far it has broken 3 plastic hangars! The studs are solid metal, which adds most of the weight. It is interesting because the lambskin used for the jacket is so soft and delicate, so you can really see how it is affected by the hardware. There is definitely a distressed look created by the tension that you have to see up close.

I am not quite sure when exactly I am going to wear this piece, but when I saw it on sale, I knew I wasn't going to leave the store without it. The weight of the jacket alone is unpractical, but I don't think that is the point. There is something special about it. Having a studded biker jacket feels like you are wearing armor, or something special at the very least. I feel powerful when I zip it up. Usually biker jackets have strange sleeves, or are cropped in an unflattering silhouette. The cut of this jacket is perfect and flattering. WIN.

And yes, it is the male version of the jacket Britney Spears wears in her 'Till the World Ends music video. As Britney demonstrates, I am totally equipped for clubbing in a post apocalyptic society!

Captain Brunch

Tee by Dries Van Noten, Shorts by Carven, Belt by Hermés, Loafers by Burberry Prorsum

The summer heat of New York really solidified my love for a good pair of shorts. I had no luck at Barney's in menswear when searching for the perfect pair, but I lucked out during the summer sale some months ago. These Carven shorts are very comfortable, and the silk and cotton blend of the fabric made it great for the weather. I wish it was summer already in SF! I also got a pair of the Burberry Prorsum AW2011 Tasseled Loafers with the thick, white, rubber sole. They make me about 1.5" taller and are one of the most comfortable pairs of leather shoes I own! I am ready to brunch, y'all.

Brace Yourself

Plain White Tee by Adam Kimmel, Camouflage Cargo Pants by Uniqlo, Boots by COS, Low Brace Harness by Zana Bayne AW2011

BOOM. Instant man peplum. Behold the Low Brace Harness/Belt from Zana Bayne Leather AW2011. This is an amazing new accessory to add to my collection. When fastened, you can really define your waist or change the silhouette of your ensemble. The Low Brace also looks like an oversized basic harness, which moves beautifully when you're in motion.

I am pretty obsessed with these Camouflage Cargo pants from Uniqlo. I mean, they are designed to slim the leg. What really surprises me is the fact that they are camouflage and cargo, yet totally awesome. Uniqlo is the best. I have to go back to New York or Tokyo or Hong Kong and stock up on more goods!!

Welcome to the Dungeon

Button down by Prada, Cuff by Hermés, Denim by Uniqlo, Pentagram Harness by Zana Bayne

Whilst vacationing in New York, I paid a visit to the studio of my dear friend Zana Bayne. Her leather fashion happens to be garnering a lot of attention these days and I could not be prouder! I wanted to preview her Fall 2011 collection, pull for my photo shoot, and shop. Upon entering, I was met with racks of harnesses, rolls of hyde, and the fragrant smell of leather. It was incredible to see the volume of product that she produces in her studio. There are certain samples being packed and readied for some impressive names in the business. One couldn't possibly resist placing a few orders! Above is a custom Pentagram harness that Zana made for me. It is the only one she has ever made in navy. Each strip of leather is delicately finished with painted sides, showing the quality and craftsmanship in her hand-made pieces. I feel so special!!

So that is where all the BLACK magic happens. Zana's space is such an inspiration. She has such a good idea of who she is as an artist and designer, but I know that she will always have this ability to grow and evolve in the best possible ways. I cannot wait to see what she comes up with next! I left New York with the navy Pentagram harness and two other pieces from her upcoming AW2011 collection, including the Hex harness from the last post, and the new Low Brace harness/belt that I will show you in my next post.

Until then, LEATHER UP. FEEL THE POWER.

Sheer Necessity

Mesh Polo, Gauntlet Ring and Biker Sandals by Burberry Prorsum, Khakis by J.Crew, Bracelet by Hermés

The first time I laid eyes on the Burberry Prorsum SS12 mesh polo, I knew it had to be mine. It is just enough GAY classic-meets-different to belong in my collection. The price tag was pretty steep so I had to let fate decide - wait until sale and see if it survives. Flash forward to sale season and it was SOLD OUT in my size in SF. But I am not a quitter. There was hope in a size larger, so I went for it anyway. Yes, the original fit me like a dream, but in retrospect, I am happy with the size up because I will inevitably need to wear something under the piece... though I don't plan to in New York! The color is a lovely pale, grayish olive that plays tricks in different lighting. I sometimes have this aching regret in my heart about not getting my size, but wearing something under the size up justifies my decision.

It is important to develop instincts about buying certain designer pieces. I try to weigh the pros and cons; the price and value versus the quality and mileage a piece has. This has saved me many paychecks... All of which I am going to spend in New York. So much to do before my trip! And it turns out, I will be working on an exciting project while I am there :)

Palladium Powers

Say hello to my new piece of jewelry: The gauntlet finger cuff from Burberry Prorsum SS11. I have had this little gem for a few months now. It is pretty delicate, but I love it. The individual chevrons are linked at the edges, providing mobility in the finger of your choosing. Burberry's SS11 collection was biker inspired, which is why I was surprised about the midieval look to the ring. Like with other runway pieces, this was quite the headache to procure. Only one or two of each size were sent to flagship stores in the US (the ring is available in S, M, and L). Try your luck at the nearest Burberry Flagship.

Fringe Jacket by Jean Paul Gaultier, Gauntlet Finger Cuff Ring by Burberry Prorsum, Bracelets by Hermés

I am still stacking bracelets on the daily. Silver and Palladum have become my fetish. I love the striking luster of white hot hardware! For my birthday, my mother gifted me the Hermés Kelly Double Tour Bracelet in black. I am simply obsessed. Wearing these pieces together makes me feel like I am wearing weapons. My partner agrees, especially when I end up poking/pinching him with jewelry. Oops. WARNING: not everyone has the same anything-for-fashion attitude when it comes to sharp accessories.

Target Acquired: Hermès 40cm Clemence Noir Birkin Bag

For my 25th Birthday, I finally got the beautiful black Birkin of my dreams. It really is the most amazing bag in the world: timeless, unparalleled quality in materials, and iconic. The 40cm in black was always my dream Birkin, but for the longest time I lusted after the Togo leather with gold hardware. I suppose fate wanted me to see my options first. After spending much time with my first born (The 35cm Clemence Bleu de Malte), I fell in love with the versatility of the Palladium hardware and the soft hand and drape of the Clemence leather. A 40cm Birkin made in Clemence, when empty, folds onto itself like it has been well traveled. Fill it with your belongings, and it has all the structure of a Togo bag. It is the perfect balance!!

Thank goodness I waited, thank my parents for putting an end to the madness, and thank JESUS the perfect bag was in stock for my birthday. Lady luck was on my side, and it is already shaping up to be a wonderful year!! I am sorry it took so long to post a picture haha

The Greatest Love of All

Leather Fringe Jacket by Jean Paul Gaultier, Gray Tank by Brian Lichtenberg, Trousers by H&M, High Tops by Lanvin, Sunglasses by Karen Walker, Leather Bracelets by Hermés, Spiked Bracelet by Funk Plus, Rings by Burberry Prorsum

A good client of mine at work surprised me a few days ago with a gift: a mint condition Jean Paul Gaultier Leather Jacket circa 1985. He had no idea that it was my birthday, or just how much I would appreciate such a piece. We had been talking about leather jackets for the past few weeks as I helped him to acquire a few new pieces for himself. I told him how much I love leather jackets and the budding collection I've been growing over the years. To my great astonishment he revealed that he had been collecting designer leather jackets for years, and that his collection boasts a whopping 150+ pieces. Needless to say there are some pieces that haven't been worn in a while. His wife had been hinting at the need for a downsize in the 3 closets that houses the collection, and I didn't think anything of it when he offered me to try on a selection from his prized possessions. When he finally came in I gladly and graciously accepted the generous gift when he said, "I have no use for it anymore. It suits your style more than mine, even if it is a show piece."

I still cannot believe this man's generosity. I am the proud and lucky new owner of a vintage Gaultier leather jacket. He said the piece had been worn approximately 7 times. It is missing the belt, but that can definitely be replaced. I am in love with the soft yet structured leather, lined with a triple tier of fringed leather. The cropped style anchored with a broad shoulder is a tell-tale sign of what era it comes from. I am debating weather or not to keep the shoulder pads, but for now I want to appreciate this jacket in its original design. I say that this piece is from 1985 because my client said that it is the men's version (plus fringe) of the biker jacket Whitney Houston wears in her music video for "The Greatest Love of All." BONUS POINTS.

One of the greatest gifts you could ever give someone is something that you feel truly suits them. What makes this jacket such an awesome gift isn't just that it is by Gaultier I MEAN THAT IS A HUGE PART OF IT, but mostly because it was personally given based on interest and appreciation. He knew it would suit me, and I am forever grateful to my fellow collector. What comes around, goes around everyone :)

Speaking of the greatest love of all, the same day I received this jacket, my partner dislocated his shoulder while grappling in a sparring exercise at his training gym. I have been happily playing the role of Nurse J while trying to make time to develop content for my blog. Bare with me. I'm back ;)
